A simple UTM naming convention for small business campaigns

Keep campaign links consistent with a shared naming sheet, clear source and medium values, and a test before publishing links in ads or emails.

Campaign reports become difficult to read when the same channel appears under several spellings. A link labeled “Facebook” in one campaign and “facebook” in another can create unnecessary cleanup. Agree on names before sharing campaign URLs.

UTM parameters are labels added to a destination URL for analytics systems that support them. They do not measure a campaign on their own; the destination needs a working measurement setup that reads those labels.

Give each field a consistent job

Use source for the platform or sender, medium for the type of traffic, and campaign for the specific initiative. A practical internal convention could use lowercase words and hyphens throughout.

For an illustrative autumn email, source might be “customer-newsletter,” medium “email,” and campaign “fall-maintenance-2026.” These are example labels, not a required naming system. Check your analytics platform’s current grouping rules before standardizing medium values.

Use a content label only when you need to distinguish placements or creative versions. “header-button” and “footer-link” can make sense if you intend to compare them. Adding fields nobody will use makes the sheet harder to maintain.

Record the destination page, source, medium, campaign, optional content label, owner, and publication date. Generate or copy the final URL from that record so staff do not reconstruct it differently each time.

Do not place personal information, email addresses, or confidential customer identifiers in campaign parameters. URLs can be copied, logged, and shared beyond the original audience.

Apply them to links from emails, ads, social posts, or other planned external placements. Avoid casually adding new campaign tags to links between your own pages; that can complicate interpretation depending on the measurement system.

For navigation inside the site, use clear ordinary links and a separate event approach if you need to measure interactions. The internal linking guide focuses on making those paths useful to readers.

Test the complete URL

Open it on a phone and confirm that it reaches the intended page. Check whether any redirect preserves the labels. Then verify the visit in your measurement setup using its supported testing process, accounting for consent settings and reporting delays.

Compare campaign results with suitable inquiries or orders, not just sessions. A large visit count can include people outside your service area or customers looking for a different offer.

Review the naming sheet before each campaign and archive retired entries without deleting the history. Consistent labels will not fix a weak offer, but they make it easier to understand which message and destination produced the inquiries you actually received.
